ALTERNATIVE SENTENCING COURTS

A conviction, incarceration, or trial may not be your only path forward. Explore options for treatment, support, and other available options for your case.

There may be options you haven’t been told about

01
SUPERIOR COURT DIVERSION PROGRAM

Eligible individuals facing certain felony charges and/or misdemeanor possession of controlled substance offenses may qualify for supervision and services instead of the typical prosecution track in RI Superior Court. Conditions may include community service, counseling, and/or payment of restitution. Successful completion of the program may result in a dismissal and removal of your criminal charge(s) from public view.

02
SUPERIOR COURT RECOVERY COURT

This specialized program combines substance use disorder treatment, counseling, monitoring, and periodic court reviews to assess progress. Successful completion may result in dismissal of misdemeanor possession charges or certain eligible felony charges.

Chelsea spent three years during her time in the public defender’s office advocating for access to this program for clients facing a wide range of felony charges and/or probation violations. Securing a placement in this court can take more than completing paperwork—it may require persistent, informed advocacy to help open the door to a second chance.

03
DISTRICT COURT MENTAL HEALTH COURT

Rhode Island’s Mental Health Treatment Calendar connects eligible individuals facing misdemeanor charges who live with serious, persistent mental illness to community treatment and support under court supervision. The program aims to improve stability, reduce incarceration, and help participants break the cycle of repeated involvement in the criminal justice system. Chelsea can assess whether this option may fit your circumstances and advocate for a referral that considers both your legal interests and your mental health needs.

04
DISTRICT COURT VET TREATMENT COURT

Rhode Island’s Veterans Treatment Calendar connects eligible veterans with court-supervised treatment and support for trauma, mental health concerns, and substance use disorders. Participation may offer an alternative to incarceration, dismissal of charges, or another favorable resolution. With extensive experience representing veterans in this specialized court, Chelsea understands the referral process and advocates for outcomes that protect her clients’ futures.
